Historic Achievements and Team Triumphs Highlight Virginia’s 2023 Track and Field Championships
New Records and Rising Stars at the Virginia State Track Finals
The recent Virginia Class 6 outdoor track and field championships at John B. Todd Stadium showcased remarkable athletic feats, including the breaking of longstanding records and standout performances from emerging talents. The event not only celebrated individual excellence but also underscored the strength of team efforts across the state.
Record-Breaking Performances in Sprint Events
In a stunning display of speed, Gar-Field’s Joshua Kai-Smith clocked an impressive 13.39 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles, shattering the previous Class 6 record of 13.61 seconds set by Grant Holloway in 2014. Holloway, a former Grassfield athlete, is now renowned for his gold medal victory in the hurdles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, making Kai-Smith’s achievement even more noteworthy.
Despite experiencing dehydration and a leg cramp that caused him to finish eighth in the 100-meter dash shortly after his hurdles race, Kai-Smith’s outlook remains optimistic. “I’m a little dehydrated,” he admitted, “but I expect even more from myself as I continue my high school career.”
Meanwhile, junior athlete Josh Johnson from Freedom High School in South Riding made headlines by surpassing a record held by Noah Lyles, a 2024 Olympic gold medalist. Johnson’s blistering 10.39 seconds in the 100 meters eclipsed Lyles’s 10.47 seconds set in 2015, marking a significant milestone for Virginia sprinting. Johnson followed up with a victory in the 200 meters, crossing the finish line in 21.27 seconds, demonstrating his versatility and speed.
Dominance of South County Girls’ Track Team
On the girls’ side, senior Mia Mason led South County High School to a commanding team victory, accumulating 34 individual points. Mason’s exceptional performance included winning the 100 meters in 11.66 seconds and securing second place in the 200 meters, 100-meter hurdles, and long jump. Her efforts contributed to South County’s total of 96 points, comfortably outpacing Colgan High School, which finished with 51 points, and West Springfield with 41.
Mason expressed her pride in her team’s collective effort: “I love my teammates and am grateful for how well we competed.” Her teammate Julia Wallace also made a significant impact by winning the 400 meters in 55.23 seconds, and the 4×100-meter relay team further boosted their score with a time of 46.41 seconds.

Colonial Forge from Stafford County secured the team title with 52 points, while West Springfield’s lone individual winner, Michael Murray, claimed victory in the pole vault with a height of 15 feet.
