Kirk Cousins Addresses His New Role and Future Prospects in the NFL

In his first public comments since the conclusion of the 2024 NFL season, which saw him lose his starting quarterback position with the Atlanta Falcons, Kirk Cousins has openly acknowledged his acceptance of a backup role. Despite this, he expressed a strong desire to return to a starting position in the league, emphasizing his ongoing passion for leading an NFL team on the field.

Transition from Star Player to Backup: A Shift in Perspective

Last year, Cousins inked a lucrative four-year deal worth $180 million with the Falcons, signaling their confidence in his abilities. However, the team’s draft strategy took an unexpected turn when they selected quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth overall pick-an athlete highly regarded for his talent and potential. Following a season marred by injury, specifically a torn Achilles tendon, Cousins managed to start 14 games for Atlanta. Yet, inconsistent performances and struggles on the field led to the coaching staff promoting Penix to the starting role, with head coach Raheem Morris confirming that Penix would be the quarterback “moving forward.”

Resilience and Reflection Amid Uncertain Future

Although Cousins missed some voluntary offseason workouts amid rumors of a trade request, he was present at the Falcons’ mandatory minicamp, signaling his commitment to the team. During a media session near the practice fields, he reflected on his physical recovery and mental resilience. Cousins highlighted improvements in his health, noting that last year’s challenges were partly due to physical limitations that he has since addressed.

Drawing inspiration from his early career, Cousins shared a quote from former Washington coach Mike Shanahan: “Tough times don’t last, tough people do.” He elaborated, emphasizing that resilience encompasses mental and emotional strength, not just physical endurance. “Life throws curveballs, but the key is to keep moving forward without pouting or giving up,” he stated.

Trade Possibilities and Contractual Considerations

While a trade remains a possibility before the upcoming season, it appears unlikely unless another team suffers a significant injury to their starting quarterback. The recent signing of Aaron Rodgers by the Pittsburgh Steelers has filled the last notable vacancy, reducing the likelihood of a quick move. Additionally, Cousins’ substantial contract, which includes a no-trade clause, complicates potential negotiations, especially considering salary cap implications for both the Falcons and any prospective trade partner.

Falcons’ Stance and Cousins’ Future Outlook

Earlier this year, Falcons officials indicated they are open to mutually beneficial outcomes that could see Cousins remain with the team or be traded if the right opportunity arises. When asked about his preferences, Cousins acknowledged that discussions about his future took place earlier in the year but emphasized that his focus now is on the present. “We’ve had conversations in January, February, March, and even April, but now we’re moving forward,” he explained.

At 36 years old, Cousins remains committed to contributing wherever he is needed. “Of course, I want to play,” he admitted, recalling his consistent starting streak from 2015 through 2024. “But I understand the reality of my situation, and I’m choosing to focus on what I can control-staying prepared and positive.”

Physical and Mental Reconditioning

Addressing his physical state, Cousins detailed a shift in his offseason training regimen. After last year’s focus on rebuilding strength following his Achilles injury, he recognized that mobility was a limiting factor. “I had the strength, but my mobility was lacking,” he explained. “Now, I’ve worked to improve both, which is crucial for optimal performance.”

He recounted that while his Achilles tendon held up well during the season, he experienced tightness in his ankle and played through a shoulder injury. His performance between Weeks 5 and 9 was notably strong, with 13 touchdown passes against just three interceptions, a 72.2% completion rate, and a passer rating of 114.4. However, in the subsequent five games, his production declined sharply, with nine interceptions, only one touchdown, and a passer rating of 63.8, reflecting the physical and mental toll of the season.

Supporting the Next Generation and Team Goals

Despite his personal challenges, Cousins has maintained a supportive attitude toward Penix, praising his teammate’s blend of skills and leadership qualities. “I’m here to support him as needed, but I also respect giving him space to grow,” Cousins said. “My role is to be a positive influence without overwhelming him.”

Penix responded positively, emphasizing the mutual respect and camaraderie between the two. “Kirk has always been consistent since day one,” Penix shared. “He’s told me many times, ‘I’ve got your back,’ and I feel the same about him. Our goal is to help this team succeed and win games.”

Looking Ahead: The 2025 Season and Beyond

When asked about his ideal scenario for 2025, Cousins expressed a focus on personal excellence and team success. “Right now, I’m committed to doing my best in this situation,” he said. “Ideally, by February, we’re celebrating a Super Bowl victory, holding the Lombardi Trophy. Every individual on this team has a part to play in reaching that goal.”
