Teenage Eiza González Opens Up About Enduring Hurtful Comments on Her Body Image and Their Lasting Impact

“That kind of criticism leaves a permanent mark on you, almost branding you for life,” she shared, reflecting on the deep emotional scars caused by harsh judgments.

The Fountain of Youth star Eiza González recently recounted a poignant moment from her youth when actress Millie Bobby Brown publicly condemned journalists for their disturbing remarks about her appearance.

During her appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast Dinner’s on Me in May, Eiza reflected on the intense scrutiny she faced as a young actress, similar to Millie’s recent experiences.

“It was heartbreaking,” Eiza admitted, recalling her teenage years when she first entered the entertainment industry. “Hearing those comments about my looks was devastating.”

In the early stages of her career, from 2007 to 2008, Eiza starred in a Mexican adaptation of the Argentine soap opera Floricienta, titled Lola, érase una vez (Lola: Once Upon a Time).

She vividly remembered debuting on stage, singing a song, and then watching a Mexican TV segment that criticized her appearance. “I was just 14, thinking, ‘Wow, this is happening to me,'” she recounted. “The hosts, who were in their 40s and 50s, called me ugly and fat, questioning why they cast someone like me.”

Choking back emotion, Eiza described how these comments left a lasting impression. “Even now, I get emotional thinking about how shocking it was,” she said. “It was humiliating, and I felt embarrassed and hurt.”

Her struggles were compounded by the tragic loss of her father in a devastating accident when she was only 12, which intensified her emotional turmoil during her teenage years.

She attempted to ignore the media’s comments, but the pain persisted, marking a turning point in her self-perception and confidence.

“At that time, I was chasing validation, feeling completely lost in my identity,” Eiza explained. “Mourning my father while trying to maintain a public image was overwhelming. I had to smile, act as a role model, and pretend everything was fine, even as I was bombarded with negativity.”

Fortunately, her resilient mother provided unwavering support, helping her navigate through these turbulent times. “I became very unkind to myself-my body, my mind, my soul-because I never felt good enough,” she shared. “Those scars stay with you forever; they shape your self-image and become a lifelong challenge.”

Millie Bobby Brown’s recent outspoken response to the media’s “disgusting” headlines resonated deeply with Eiza, reminding her of her own early career struggles. “I really connected with her words because she was speaking about her own frightening experiences and asserting her right to define herself on her own terms,” she noted.

Back in March, Millie, who began her career at age 12 on Stranger Things, publicly addressed the toxic comments she faced during her press tour for Enola Holmes 2.

On March 3, Millie called out the harmful headlines and discourse, stating, “We often talk about empowering young women, but when it comes to reality, it’s easier to tear them down for clicks. People can’t handle seeing a girl grow into a woman on her own terms. I refuse to apologize for maturing, dressing, or presenting myself as I choose. I won’t be shamed for my appearance or choices.”

It’s truly heartbreaking that stars like Millie and Eiza, along with countless other performers of all ages, endure such vicious criticism about their looks-whether from social media or mainstream outlets. Hopefully, public outrage and accountability will deter those responsible for these harmful comments.
