CHARLES CITY, VA – Harrison Ruffin Tyler, the last surviving grandson of President John Tyler, passed away at the age of 96. His death marks the end of a living link that bridged the 19th and 21st centuries, as Tyler was born 83 years after his grandfather left office in 1845.

Tyler’s passing was announced recently, highlighting the remarkable span of history his life encompassed. President Tyler was 63 years old when his grandson, Lyon Gardiner Tyler Sr., was born. Harrison Ruffin Tyler was born in 1928, when his father was already 75, and President Tyler had been deceased for more than six decades.

Throughout his life, Tyler was known for his dedication to preserving his family’s legacy. He maintained Sherwood Woodland, the historic plantation once owned by President Tyler, and was involved in safeguarding nearby Civil War sites. His efforts helped keep alive the stories of America’s past, including the tumultuous Civil War era.

In an official statement, Annique Dunning, executive director of Sherwood Woodland, described Tyler as a beloved father and grandfather. She expressed that his absence would be deeply felt by those who knew him, emphasizing his warmth, generosity, and unwavering sense of humor.

Tyler’s stewardship extended beyond mere preservation; he actively participated in restoring and protecting historic landmarks such as Castle Pocahontas, a Union fortification from the Civil War period. His commitment ensured that future generations could learn from these vital pieces of American history.

Legacy of a Presidential Lineage

John Tyler, often called the “Accidental President,” assumed office unexpectedly after President William Henry Harrison’s death in 1841. As the first vice president to succeed a president due to death, Tyler’s presidency marked a pivotal moment in American political history. His tenure is often viewed as the final chapter of Virginia’s aristocratic influence within the White House.

Married twice and father to 15 children, including Lyon Gardiner Tyler Sr., President Tyler’s lineage continued to shape American history long after his presidency. The extraordinary 235-year span from Tyler’s birth to his grandson’s death underscores the enduring legacy of his family and the evolving story of the United States.
