Expert Travel Insights from a Legendary Explorer

Genuine travel wisdom often comes from those who have charted the most challenging and extraordinary journeys. In this series, we turn to seasoned explorers and globetrotters to share their invaluable tips and firsthand experiences.

Meet Sir Ranulph Fiennes: The Pinnacle of Exploration

At 78 years old, Sir Ranulph Fiennes stands as arguably the most accomplished living adventurer. His record-breaking feats include being the first individual to reach both the North and South Poles solely by land, as well as crossing the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans unsupported. Notably, at age 65, he summited Mount Everest, defying age and expectation. His friendship with King Charles highlights his prominence, with the monarch once remarking, “I greatly admire the daring expeditions undertaken by Ran.”

Life on the Move: A Traveling Lecturer’s Perspective

Residing in the scenic Exmoor region of Southwest England, I recently journeyed to Oxford to deliver a lecture attended by 900 eager listeners, sharing insights on competitive expeditions. My life revolves around constant travel, and I thrive on giving talks. Currently, I am touring with my show, Living Dangerously, which spans 90 towns across the UK-sometimes on the southern coast, other times in the Scottish Highlands. Unfortunately, the schedule isn’t organized geographically, so I often travel back home after each event. My most recent international trip was to Málaga, Spain, where I spoke to top corporate performers during a team-building retreat, flown out specifically for the occasion.

Unconventional Travel Experiences and Future Adventures

Unlike many, I’ve never indulged in typical beach holidays or city breaks. My most recent grand adventure involved a 2,500 km journey along the Nile River with my cousin, actor Joseph Fiennes, for a National Geographic documentary pre-pandemic. This trip commemorated the 50th anniversary of my 1968 hovercraft expedition down the same river. Looking ahead, in summer 2023, I plan to revisit British Columbia, Canada, retracing a 1971 rubber boat expedition from the remote Yukon forests to the US border.

Long-Term Expeditions and Self-Sufficient Travel

My most extended journey spanned from 1979 to 1982, taking seven years to meticulously plan. I circumnavigated the globe without the aid of modern technology like GPS or satellite navigation. My wife mapped the entire route on a globe with a crayon, and we communicated via Morse code-an incredible feat of planning and perseverance.

Travel Essentials and Personal Tips

During my travels, I often tune into the radio or listen to Enya’s soothing melodies. I also keep up with current affairs through publications like The Economist and The Week, which provide concise summaries of global events. Having lost fingers to frostbite on expeditions, I always recommend carrying six-hour hand warmers for extreme weather conditions. Additionally, I keep a tube of Anthisan Cream handy to quickly soothe bites and stings, which can be particularly troublesome in remote environments.

Early Memories and Personal Roots

My earliest holiday memory is a family trip to Kruger National Park. I first visited South Africa at just one year old, as my grandmother was South African. My family history is marked by loss-one of her sons was killed in WWI, and my father died in WWII just four months before I was born. I was raised in South Africa until I was 12, when I moved to boarding school. It’s been about two decades since I last returned to the country that shaped my childhood.

Hidden Gems and Dream Destinations

The Isle of Man is a destination I believe remains underrated. Situated close to the UK but not part of it, this island boasts rich history and a distinct identity, much like Guernsey and Jersey. If I could be anywhere right now, I’d choose a warm, rain-free location. I’ve yet to visit China or India, and both are high on my list for future adventures.
