The Hangtown Classic stands as the oldest race in American motocross history, predating the official Pro Motocross Championship by several years. Its origins trace back to 1969 in Placerville, California, from which the event derives its name. Since 1974, the race has been hosted within California’s state parks, becoming a cornerstone of the 54-year-old championship series. Known for its challenging natural terrain and modest jumps-eschewing the large, adrenaline-pumping air sections typical of modern tracks-Hangtown is renowned for its grueling and demanding course. When combined with the summer heat, it consistently ranks among the most physically taxing rounds on the calendar.

“The Hangtown Motocross Classic has become a symbol of the Pro Motocross Series because it exemplifies the toughness and resilience required to succeed in this sport,” explained Bob Messer of the Grime Diggers North Bike Membership. “This race has a rich history spanning over five decades, and we look forward to creating more memorable moments each year. We sincerely appreciate the support from Michael’s Reno Powersports and are excited for their continued involvement this season.”

Michael’s Reno Powersports, which partnered as the title sponsor last year, is recognized as Northern Nevada’s premier powersports dealership, offering a diverse inventory from seven leading brands, including motocross giants GASGAS, Husqvarna, KTM, and Yamaha. The dealership also features Northern Nevada’s largest OEM parts department, with a comprehensive service network that extends into the greater Sacramento region. As their presence in Northern California expands, the Hangtown event provides an excellent platform to showcase their brand to a national audience. This year, their support is further strengthened by a new racing team, MRPSBR Husqvarna Racing, operated in partnership with Stan Benson Racing. The team’s roster includes eight riders competing in both 450 and 250 classes, led by Estonian rider Harri Kullas, who finished 20th in the 450 Class standings last season and ranked 13th in the SMX Playoffs.

“Our dedication to motorcycles and racing fuels our ambition to make Michael’s Reno Powersports the top dealership worldwide,” stated Maya Keller, the dealership’s General Manager. “Our partnership with Hangtown has been instrumental in our growth, inspiring us to support the sport and provide a platform for racers to chase their dreams. We’re proud to deepen our roots in the motocross community and continue contributing to the sport’s legacy.”

The opening race of the 2025 season delivered on expectations, featuring intense competition among what is arguably the most talented field in Pro Motocross history. The rivalry between Honda HRC’s Jett Lawrence and Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Eli Tomac provided a thrilling narrative, marking a compelling chapter between two former champions. Meanwhile, Yamaha’s Haiden Deegan launched his title defense in the 250 Class with a disciplined yet confident performance, overcoming fierce challenges from his rivals.

Last year, Deegan successfully defended his 250 Class title at Hangtown, overcoming a dramatic crash to secure a 1-2 finish and clinch the overall victory. In the premier 450 Class, one of the most remarkable rides in recent history unfolded as defending champion Chase Sexton recovered from a first-lap fall to surge from last to first aboard his Red Bull KTM, a performance that became a defining moment of his championship-winning campaign and will be remembered as a classic in the sport’s history.

Pre-race activities kick off on Friday, May 30, with the first qualifying sessions for SMX Next – Motocross and the second round of the Women’s Motocross Championship, both part of the AMA National Series.

The main event at Hangtown is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, with practice starting at 8 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. ET, followed by opening ceremonies at 12:30 p.m. PT / 3:30 p.m. ET. The entire event will be broadcast live exclusively on Peacock, beginning with qualifying coverage at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET, and continuing with race motos at 1 p.m. PT / 4 p.m. ET.
