“A groundbreaking milestone for the gaming sector…”

Employees affiliated with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) have announced a significant development: unionized quality assurance (QA) testers at Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax, have reached a “historic tentative agreement” with Microsoft after nearly two years of negotiations.
This agreement, currently in the final stages of approval and still considered tentative, aims to establish new industry benchmarks. It features notable salary hikes across the board and introduces minimum pay standards for QA staff. Given that QA roles often face job insecurity, this agreement marks a crucial victory for these workers.
According to the CWA’s official statement, some Bethesda employees shared their perspectives on what this agreement signifies for them. Jessee Leese, a QA tester at ZeniMax, expressed:
“Video game development has become a dominant force in the entertainment world, yet those behind the scenes are frequently exploited due to their passion and creativity. Forming unions, negotiating contracts, and uniting voices have empowered us to reclaim the respect and autonomy we deserve. Our initial contract is a call to action for all game industry professionals. We are the creators of these experiences, and it’s up to us to set new standards for fair treatment.”
Page Branson, a Senior QA Tester, added:
“QA teams nationwide are leading the charge for comprehensive change within the industry. Standing up to one of the world’s largest corporations is no small feat. This victory is a milestone not only for current game developers but also for future generations of workers in the industry.”
Over the past year, more than 200 Bethesda employees across various U.S. studios have organized into a unified union effort, aiming to elevate industry standards. Their ongoing activism underscores a persistent push for better rights and working conditions at Microsoft and Xbox.
