Deciphering the Future: Will Alex Ovechkin Hang Up His Skates?
There’s a well-known adage suggesting that individuals must recognize when it’s time to step away gracefully from their careers. This wisdom extends beyond everyday life and applies equally to professional athletes, especially when their peak performance years are behind them. The question of retirement often looms large, prompting athletes to evaluate whether they should continue competing or bow out with dignity.
In the realm of hockey, few players embody this dilemma more prominently than Alex Ovechkin. The legendary Capitals forward has reached an age where many fans and analysts start to wonder if his departure from the ice is imminent. Despite the speculation, it appears Ovechkin has no plans to hang up his skates before the 2025-26 NHL season.
Insights from Ovechkin and His Family on Retirement Plans
Ovechkin’s stature in the NHL is unparalleled, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Drafted first overall in 2004, he has dedicated his entire professional life to the Washington Capitals. His achievements are staggering: in 2017, he was recognized as one of the top 100 NHL players of all time, and most recently, he surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most career goals in league history.
Beyond goal-scoring records, Ovechkin holds the NHL record for the most empty-net goals, the most power-play goals, and the highest number of shots on goal. His accolades include a Stanley Cup victory in 2018, the Conn Smythe Trophy, three Hart Memorial Trophies, and three Ted Lindsay Awards. Such accomplishments underscore his enduring dominance on the ice, making retirement seem distant for now.
However, recent comments from his wife, Nastasiya Ovechkina, hint at a possible future transition. On May 30, 2025, a Russian outlet, AIF, reported that Ovechkin might return to Russia in 2026, signaling a potential end to his North American hockey career.

Ovechkin’s current contract with the Capitals extends through the 2025-26 season. According to his wife, the plan is to play through that year before returning to his homeland. She stated, “Alexander still has a contract for one more year. So, we plan to compete next season, then head back to Moscow, to our homeland. We will stay in Russia, for sure.”
This revelation followed an email from the Capitals’ sales team, which mistakenly suggested that the 2025-26 season might be Ovechkin’s last with the team. The Capitals’ public relations department quickly clarified that the email was an error and that no definitive decision about his future had been made beyond next year.
As of now, Ovechkin remains focused on the upcoming season. At 39 years old, he maintains a pragmatic outlook on his career trajectory. “For me, it’s about knowing when to step away-probably around 40,” he remarked. “I want to keep skating and testing myself, and then we’ll see what’s next.”
