The debut of Rodarte’s autumn collection was anchored in a singular, evocative color palette. “Our inspiration began with a soft lavender-gray shade-an ethereal hue that we envisioned as both gothic and delicate,” explained designer Laura Mulleavy. “It’s reminiscent of moonlit nights, where shadows and light intertwine, guiding our choice to see color through the lens of moonbeams.” This gentle gray tone was reflected in flowing charmeuse fabric with voluminous sleeves, reminiscent of mutton, and in a chiffon caftan with a ruffled hem that pooled softly around the model like a drifting cloud. The color spectrum expanded to include a deep crimson reminiscent of twilight, a cool mint green that felt otherworldly, and the deepest black, rich in velvet textures.

Reimagining Romanticism with Subtle Opulence

The collection’s array of dresses embodied the Mulleavy sisters’ signature blend of romanticism and whimsy, presented through a more restrained aesthetic than typical contemporary designs. While the collection was not devoid of embellishments, their brilliance emanated from within-an understated glow rather than overt flashiness. Delicate white lace appliqués adorned bodices, necklines, and collars, evoking a sense of quiet austerity akin to monastic robes. Conversely, a simple slip dress was transformed with shimmering glitter, and a strapless gown was crafted from sequined crochet, adding unexpected texture and light. “It was truly exciting to select fabrics that could generate their own visual interest and luminosity,” Laura shared. “Since most of the palette was muted, the challenge was to explore how light and shadow could dance within the fabric, much like observing someone through a moonlit window.”

Personal Inspiration and Emotional Connection

Kate Mulleavy emphasized the deeply personal nature of their creative process. “Our collections are driven by what inspires us in the moment,” she said. “I believe that anyone choosing one of our pieces has an emotional connection to it. When you select an outfit, it’s often because it resonates with something you feel or desire. If you could imagine the universe’s most beautiful night-where moonlight is your only illumination-that’s the feeling we aim to evoke.” The final piece in the lineup, featuring a Victorian-inspired lace bodice, princess sleeves, and a floral inlay that shimmered in the dark, seemed to embody this nocturnal allure perfectly, as if it could glow softly in the absence of light.
