Revealing Princess Diana’s Inner Thoughts Through a Personal Letter Sent Shortly After King Charles’s Wedding

A recently discovered handwritten letter by Princess Diana offers rare insights into her emotional state during her early days as a member of the royal family.

This intimate correspondence, obtained by American collectors on Friday, May 30, was addressed to Buckingham Palace footman Mark Simpson. Dated July 31, 1981-just two days after her wedding to King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales-the letter sheds light on her personal feelings during a tumultuous period.

“I just wanted to express my gratitude for all your kindness and patience since I moved into Buckingham Palace,” she wrote. “Your support made my transition so much easier, especially since I felt quite isolated. We shared many laughs, and I can’t thank you enough for that.”

She continued, “I hope you enjoyed Wednesday’s celebration and liked my dress. I’m heading back to Britain tomorrow, surrounded by so many people-I’ll need to keep a close eye on Evelyn!”

“The sad truth is that I haven’t had my cereal-oh well,” Diana concluded her letter. “How am I supposed to survive without my morning bowls? [smiley face]. Thank you so much for being yourself-much love, Diana.”

This letter is part of the ongoing Princess Diana’s Style & Royal Collection auction, now live through Julien’s Auctions. While many items in the collection include notes to friends or designers, this particular letter offers a rare glimpse into her feelings of loneliness and emotional struggle as a royal newcomer.

Following her marriage to Charles on July 29, 1981, in London, Diana and Charles announced their separation in 1992 amid persistent rumors of infidelity. Their divorce was finalized in August 1996, a year before Diana’s tragic death at age 36.

Speculation about Charles’s extramarital relationship with Queen Camilla began as early as 1986. In a candid 1994 interview, Charles admitted to infidelity, stating, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

Diana openly discussed her marriage and her husband’s extramarital affairs in numerous interviews after their separation.

“There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” she famously stated during a 1995 BBC interview.

She also reflected on her decision to end her marriage, saying, “Many people sensed there were issues but chose not to intervene. When we traveled abroad, we had separate apartments-though on the same floor-which the press inevitably leaked, causing further complications. Charles and I had our responsibilities, and maintaining our roles was crucial.”
