An Unexpected Hit from the Welsh Duo

The recent release of “Have U Ever Been 2 Wales” by The Bug Club exemplifies the band’s signature blend of energetic, cheeky, and slightly chaotic pop-punk. The track, characterized by its catchy shout-along vocals and bursts of gritty guitar riffs, unexpectedly resonated with audiences more than the band initially anticipated. Its lively, carefree vibe captures the essence of youthful exuberance and spontaneity.

Origins and Context Behind the Song

Tilly Harris, the band’s lead singer and bassist, shares in a video interview from their rural Welsh hometown that the song was conceived as a spontaneous project. “We thought, ‘It’s a fun little tune. Let’s just put it out there,'” she explains. “To our surprise, it struck a chord with listeners beyond our expectations.” Interestingly, despite its popularity, “Have U Ever Been 2 Wales” does not feature on their latest album, “Very Human Features,” because it was created as a standalone piece.

Sam Willmett, the band’s guitarist and co-songwriter, adds that the song was written independently, primarily to mark St. David’s Day, the national day of Wales celebrated annually on March 1st. “It was just a quick burst of creativity, a one-off,” he notes. The song’s spontaneous nature reflects the band’s approach to songwriting-lighthearted, immediate, and unpretentious.

The Band’s Creative Process and Musical Philosophy

The Bug Club’s prolific output is rooted in their relaxed yet efficient approach to songwriting. Since their debut in 2021, they have released four albums, along with numerous singles and EPs, demonstrating their commitment to constant musical exploration. Willmett describes his songwriting process as remarkably swift-often constructing the core of a song in the time it takes to brew a cup of tea. “It’s very British of us,” Harris admits with a smile.

Their creative workflow typically begins with Willmett laying down the foundational structure-crafting lyrics and basic melodies-before Harris joins in to flesh out the arrangement. “He makes the skeleton, and I add the flesh,” she explains. Vocal arrangements, including harmonies and call-and-response sections, are then refined collaboratively, with the duo’s deep familiarity with each other’s musical instincts guiding the process.

A Lighthearted Approach to Music and Performance

The band’s philosophy emphasizes fun and spontaneity over seriousness. Harris emphasizes that their approach to music is rooted in not taking things too seriously: “You have to laugh at stuff. That’s how you keep it enjoyable.” Willmett echoes this sentiment, asserting that longevity in the music industry depends on maintaining a playful attitude. “Why dedicate yourself to a band if you’re just going to be serious all the time? It’s not sustainable,” he states.

Their playful nature is reflected in their history-since forming in 2016, the band has maintained a whimsical identity, even drawing inspiration from childhood insect collectors, which inspired their name. Their lighthearted attitude has helped them carve out a unique space within the indie scene.

The Band’s Evolving Lineup and Collaborations

In 2024, The Bug Club experienced a lineup change when their longtime drummer left. Since then, they’ve performed with various fill-in drummers, including Tom Rees, a member of Cardiff’s Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard and a frequent collaborator and producer for the band. Rees’s involvement underscores the close-knit nature of their musical community-Harris describes him as “more than just a drummer, he’s like an honorary member.”

Harris humorously notes that she can’t envision working with any other producer, emphasizing the strong bond they share with Rees. “He’s really talented, and he’s also our best mate,” she says. However, she adds with a grin, “Unless he gets sick of us-that could happen.”
